Known as the Golden Army, the Sri Lanka Men’s Senior National Team are eligible to participate in the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, AFC Asian Cup, SAFF Championship, SAG’s, and any other Invitational, International and Friendly matches and tournaments involving National Teams.
The Golden Army made their International debut in 1952 against India in the Colombo Cup where despite a 2-0 loss, the Sri Lankans put up a strong performance in front of a home crowd. Sri Lanka registered their first-ever International victory in the 1954 edition of the Colombo Cup with a 2-1 win over Myanmar before which they shocked Title Holders India in a 1-1 draw to see Sri Lanka finish as runners-up of the Tournament.
Sri Lanka’s Golden Era came in the ’90s when with support from FIFA and AFC, the FFSL embarked on promoting the game to a higher level with development schemes at both club and international level. Those efforts began to bear fruit in the mid-1990s when they tasted their maiden regional success by winning the 1995 SAFF Championship.
Inspired by the triumph, they went on to excel in AFC qualification for France 1998 where Sri Lanka earned their first-ever FIFA World Cup qualifying victory with a memorable 3-0 drubbing of the Philippines in 1996.
At the continental level, Sri Lanka impressed at the 2006 AFC Challenge Cup finishing in second place.
In March 2020 FFSL appointed Mr. Amir Alagic Bosnian born Australian Citizen UEFA Pro License holder as the Head Coach of the Sri Lanka National Team and Bosnian Amir Doksanaltic as the Goalkeeping Coach.
